A system and method for minimizing the gap in service during the reception of an MBMS session due to the reselection of a neighboring cell in which that MBMS session is not ongoing, wherein a mobile station (MS) indicates its target cell and MBMS service id (i.e., BSIC, neighboring cell index, and Temporary MBMS Group Identity (TMGI)) to a network by sending this information to the network in an RLC/MAC message, e.g., a packet downlink ACK/NACK or with a new message. If the network has resources available for allocation, the network is permitted to allocate these resources for the MBMS session indicated by the MS and send corresponding MBMS neighbor cell information to the MS upon receipt of the packet downlink ACKINACK or the new message. When the MS receives the MBMS neighbor cell information, it will then reselect to the target cell identified by the MBMS neighbor cell information.
