The present invention is based on the discovery that overexpression of OSM leads to bone formation and that OSM expression inhibits adipogenesis. The present invention provides methods that modulate bone formation and adipogenesis. The invention also provides compositions that modulate bone formation. The compositions comprise OSM or a nucleic acid encoding OSM and an anti-inflammatory agent.
