Side impact protection system with an airbag for motor vehicles comprises a flow path (19, 21) to a pressure compensation chamber (18) that is closed by the high in-flow pressure in a gas distribution hose (12) when inflation gas flows through the gas distribution hose from an inflation device (13) to a protective chamber (14). When the in-flow pressure falls, the flow path opens for gas flowing back from the inflated protective chamber into the pressure compensation chamber. Preferred Features: The pressure compensation chamber is separated from the inflatable protective chamber by at least one separating wall (23). The gas distribution hose lies against the separating wall in an interlocking manner during high in-flow pressure and lifts off the separating wall when the pressure falls to create a connecting path between the protective chamber and pressure compensation chamber.
