The device has a diagnostic unit (30) provided for testing fuel cells e.g. proton exchange diaphragm fuel cell, of a fuel cell unit (10) by using a cyclovoltametry method. The diagnostic unit performs a corrosion measurement in the fuel cell unit. An arithmetic and logic unit (24) of the diagnostic unit is connected to a voltage tap (20) to form an evaluation unit. The arithmetic and logic unit has a processor unit (26) and a memory unit (28). An independent claim is also included for a method for determining deterioration degree of a fuel cell unit.
