The method involves controlling a torque of an alternator of a motor vehicle by a direct control of excitation of the alternator. Excitation of the alternator is established after a comparison of a setpoint value determined from a reference torque (C-CONS) with a parameter i.e. excitation voltage, that is obtained from the excitation of the alternator, where the parameter is obtained from a measured excitation current (I-EXC-MES). An independent claim is also included for an alternator torque controlling system comprising a torque adjusting device.
