PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method and a unit for searching a usable substitution block of a rewritable optical recording medium.;SOLUTION: When one entry or more registered to SDL exist, while an entry to which the substitution block is assigned does not exist, a first normal block in a spare area is determined to be a first usable substitution block. At that time, when a substitution area is located after a user area, a normal block following the last data block of the user area is decided to be the first usable substitution block.
