PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and to provide vaccines used for protecting a feline and a kitten from FIV infection. PSOLUTION: The present invention provides nucleic acid molecules containing nucleotide sequences substantially corresponding to all or a portion of the region of the FIV env gene encoding residues 483 to 567 of the FIV envelope protein or a sequence which is modified, substantially homologous with or which hybridises with any such aforesaid sequence, their use in the preparation of vaccines against FIV, and synthetic polypeptides encoded by them.
