A routing switch for use in a communications network in which a plurality of routing switches are interconnected by communication links in a first ring and a second ring, routing switch comprising: one or more transceivers (30, 32 ) connectable to links (34, 36) associated communication for connection to one or more adjacent routing switches in said network; a table (47) routing; a matrix (50) switch arranged to route traffic to and from said one or more transceivers (30, 32) based on the table (47) routing, and one or more processors (46) adapted to: test the quality of such communication links between said one or more switches adjacent routing; detect whether one or more first links of said communication links do not meet a quality threshold; transmit information identifying said one or more first links from the routing switch to other routing switches in said network; correcting said table (47) routing to reroute impacted traffic, such that impacted traffic does not traverse said one or more first links due to said one or more first links being faulty; and route such impacted traffic to a destination node based on said corrected table of routing, in one direction by said different ring from a direction that would have moved to said destination node if said one or more first links not been It has been erroneous; characterized in that: the matrix (50) switch is arranged to route traffic to and from said one or more transceivers (30, 32) so that during normal operation traffic flows to other routing switches in said network by the first ring and the second ring; and the processor (46) is arranged to correct said table (47) routing to create a reroute path taking account of a number of hops for the traffic between a source switch and one destination in said reroute path, a transmission rate normalized cumulative error bits from the source and destination in said reroute path and a level of traffic congestion between the source and destination switch in said reroute path switch.
