In a fuel cell system ice is prevented from becoming deposited on a given component (16; 14', 16', 18') by slowing down cooling of the component (16; 14', 16', 18') after the end of operation of the fuel cell system. For this purpose, either active means (20, 22, 24) may be used to supply thermal energy or a latent heat accumulator (36) which automatically releases previously stored energy below a predetermined temperature.
