Provided is a method of collecting proteins from an animal fiber wherein the operation can be easily conducted at a low production cost with the use of neither chemicals such as an oxidant, a reductant or a surfactant nor enzymes. In a dissolving step, an animal fiber is dissolved by using urea in a molten state to give an animal fiber solution. In the subsequent separation step, water and an organic solvent such as alcohol are added to the animal fiber solution and the proteins thus precipitated are collected. Alternatively, the animal fiber solution is dialyzed and thus urea is removed in the separation step so that the proteins can be fractionated into water-soluble proteins and water-insoluble proteins followed by collection. Also, it is possible to fractionate a mixture comprising an animal fiber with a synthetic fiber or an animal fiber with a plant fiber and separate the individual fibers as single fibers.
