The method involves forming cathode-sided cathode exhaust gas in a subordinate water gas shift-process e.g. high temperature-shift process, of reformate gases in a fuel cell system, where the cathode exhaust gas contains water in a gas phase apart from main components of oxygen and nitrogen. The cathode exhaust gas is allowed to directly undergo a reformation process, so that the water vapor that is contained in the cathode exhaust gas undergoes the water gas shift-process. An anode-sided formed exhaust gas is burned in a catalytic or non-catalytic residual gas burner (5). An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system for producing heat and/or current.
