Process for operating a fuel cell arrangement having a gas generating system and a fuel cell comprises: producing a hydrogen-containing gas for operating the fuel cell from water and a hydrocarbon in the gas generating system; converting the water and the hydrocarbon into a vaporous or gaseous phase; and feeding gaseous hydrocarbon (methanol) through a region saturated with water vapor. The pressure level is regulated in the flow direction of the hydrocarbon. Preferred Features: The region saturated with water vapor is divided by a membrane into two partial regions. The water-hydrocarbon ratio of the material stream fed to the gas generating system is adjusted using a water partial pressure via a pressure regulating valve at the temperature level.
