The method involves evaluating detected images of vehicles or indicators e.g. number plate (1), and controlling light exposure in a global shutter-mode to simultaneously expose all pixels of an image sensor (6) i.e. complementary MOS sensor. The vehicles or indicators are illuminated with an infrared-light flash for a period in a range of microseconds. A rest period upto next flash is provided in a range of milliseconds. Light energy emitted in a time period formed from flash and rest periods is selected such that the energy remains in a range of permissible limit of ophthalmic compatibility. An independent claim is also included for a traffic monitoring system for executing a method for automatic recognition of motor vehicles or indicators.
