The method involves providing a software manager in a vehicle for process supported maintenance of software of control devices (5) of the vehicle. Data (4) required for changing or downloading the software of the control devices are transmitted over a physical interface (6) e.g. interface to a data carrier such as DVD, by the manager. The data are managed and distributed to the control devices by the manager. A user is authenticated before the data required for changing or downloading the software of the control devices are transmitted. An independent claim is also included for a device for changing or downloading software for a vehicle.
