The method involves recording images (B) of objects in a surrounding field of a vehicle (F) using a camera (1.1) at time intervals, and introducing an evaluation unit (1.2), where shape and/or design of the objects is considered during detection of objects. A defined image area of each image is divided into horizontal image lines using the evaluation unit, where gray values are integrated and standardized using the evaluation unit in such a manner that a vertical image column is determined for each image area. An independent claim is also included for an object detection device comprising a camera.
