Biocatalytic reduction of highly water-soluble hydrophobic prochiral ketone compounds (I) to chiral alcohols using microorganisms, comprises fixing the prochiral ketones in an adsorber, dissolving the fixed material in an aqueous medium and transporting into a reaction chamber in the presence of microorganisms capable of reducing (I) to chiral alcohols. Biocatalytic reduction of highly water-soluble hydrophobic prochiral ketone compounds of formula (R 1-C(=O)-R 2) (I) using microorganisms to chiral alcohols, comprises fixing the prochiral ketones in adsorber, dissolving the fixed material in an aqueous medium and transporting into a reaction chamber in the presence of microorganisms capable of reducing (I) to chiral alcohols. R1, R2 : alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkylalkyl (all optionally substituted by halogenated nitro and amino groups). An independent claim is included for a device for the biocatalytic reduction of (I) using microorganisms, comprising a bioreactor (01), a separately arranged adsorber column (02) and a cell retention filter (03), where the bioreactor, the adsorber column and the cell retention filter are connected with one another by a pipe (07) so that an aqueous reaction medium is supplied in the circulation.
