Preparation of hydrophobic, optically active hydroxy compound from hydrophobic, prochiral ketone (I) using vegetable biocatalyst in an aqueous solution and at least one adsorbent, which is in contact with the aqueous solution and adsorbs up to 0.1% of the hydrophobic, prochiral ketone, is claimed. Preparation of hydrophobic, optically active hydroxy compound from hydrophobic, prochiral ketone of formula (R 1-C(=O)-R 2) (I) using vegetable biocatalyst in an aqueous solution and at least one adsorbent, which is in contact with the aqueous solution and adsorbs up to 0.1% of the hydrophobic, prochiral ketone, is claimed. R 1+R 2at least 3 carbon atoms. An independent claim is included for the optically active hydroxy compounds prepared by the above method.
