The buttonhole machine (1) comprises a cutter (30), which cuts a workpiece and comprises a cutter holder (50). A pulse motor is coupled with the cutter or the cutter holder to move the cutter or the cutter holder between origin position and a cutting position. A control unit is provided for controlling a drive of the pulse motor, when the buttonhole is formed. An encoder is provided to the pulse motor for detecting an actual driven pulse of the pulse motor.
