PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize which pattern class registered in a database an input pattern corresponds to through collating even when acquisition conditions of data greatly change. ;SOLUTION: An input means acquires pattern sets (A1, B1) for instruction through two sensing processes, and a means is provided which finds a feature extraction matrix AF of the set A1 and a feature extraction matrix BF of the set B1 maximizing inter-class variance corresponding to different classes and minimizing in-class variance corresponding to the same class, and a reference data base previously holds a set of feature quantities calculated by using the feature extraction matrix BF and the feature extraction matrix BF for respective patterns B1i of the set B1 and a best-matching decision means selects the element which is most similar to the feature quantity extracted by applying the feature extraction matrix AF to an inputted pattern A2j from the reference database.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
