PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the accuracy of pattern recognition/collation by determining a most similar element between a feature amount extracted from an input pattern and a preserved feature amount. ;SOLUTION: An identification card face image is fetched from an image scanner similarly to the case of a teaching image input, a feature vector fB1i is calculated by using a feature extraction matrix Fi for each pattern B1i and registered in a reference image data base FB1. The face image from a video camera 1 is stored in an image memory A7, converted to a pattern a2 and transferred to a pattern memory A. A pattern A2j from the pattern memory A calculates a feature vector fA2ji by using the feature extraction matrix Fi from a feature extraction matrix memory 19 found at the time of off-line. In optimum match processing, an index (i) of an entry in the reference data base FB1 is changed, the feature vector most similar to the feature vector fA2ji is selected out of the reference image data base and the vector is outputted to an output terminal 18 as the recognized result.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
