Refers to methods of selection for resistance or tolerance to rust, especially for Asian soybean rust (FAS Phakopsora pachyrhizi). The markers are also useful for positional cloning of genes resistant or tolerant to rust.Also described is a method of obtaining cultivars resistant or tolerant to diseases, a process for obtaining a population of plants and a method for Control of Plant diseases in a population. Another object is the use of species of the genus Glycine as a source of Resistance to obtain cultivars resistant or tolerant to FAS.Claim 1: Method for the selection and identification of Carriers of a phenotypic characteristic of interest from a Biological Population,Characterized in that it comprises: (a) a molecular marker to associate phenotypic characteristic of interest; (b) individuals of the Biological Population Segregating for the presence or absence of at least a molecular marker associated with the phenotypic trait.Where such a characteristic phenotype is conferred by one or more Genetic loci; (c) indicate the markers showing the profile of individuals Segregating for (b); and (d) determine the patterns of markers (c) of the genetic loci associated with phenotypic characteristic of Interest.
