A method is described for separating glass plates from a continuously produced glass strip, in which prior to the separation process the glass strip is continuously examined for glass errors and other quality criteria such as glass thickness, optical quality, glass internal stress, color, surface quality, the areas that are useful for various end products are determined and from such examinations a cutting pattern is determined in a cutting optimization device for a pre-determined length of glass, wherein the glass plates of one or another raw format are arranged in a strip section in such a way that the glass properties present within the raw format are acceptable for the end product produced from the raw format, whereupon the strip section is separated. In order to significantly increase the yield, the raw formats within a strip section are arranged in front and alongside one another in such a way that areas that have unacceptable glass properties lie outside the end products or outside of a pre-defined area of an end product and thus the useful area in a strip section is maximized. A corresponding device is also described.
