The invention relates to a surface ionization gas detector (10) comprising an ionization area (12), over which an analysis gas can be conducted, and further comprising at least one detection device for detecting analysis gas ions, wherein the surface of the ionization area is provided with nano-peaks (30). This causes a concentration and thus a significant increase of the electric field at the pointed ends of the nano-peaks, which significantly improves the ion release, whereby the electric field thus can be significantly increased compared to a flat area, which leads to an increase of the ion emission by several orders of magnitude.
