The method involves examining a catalytic effect of an exhaust-gas treatment device (16) for diagnosis of a catalytic converter. A result of diagnosis of catalyst is utilized for diagnosis of a filter device, where the treatment device includes a flow area acting as the catalytic converter and the filter device and passed with exhaust gas. The filter device is functional and non-functional when a sufficient catalytic effect is diagnosed and not diagnosed, respectively. An oxygen storage capability is determined through examination of the catalytic effect of the treatment device. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing an exhaust-gas treatment device arranged within an exhaust area of an internal-combustion engine.
