The method involves measuring emission for an individual cylinder (2) depending on parameter such as engine speed, injected fuel mass, exhaust gas recirculation rate, fresh air mass, exhaust gas temperature, intake air temperature, coolant temperature and/or oil temperature of an internal-combustion engine (1). Total emissions are determined by multiplying the measured emission of individual cylinder with a number of cylinders by stress concentration factor. The emission of the individual cylinder is estimated by characteristic diagram, model or polynomial.
