The method involves forming a stationary model for determining a stationary soot emission on basis of measured values determined by stationary measurement of an internal-combustion engine in an engine operating region, where the model describes stationary soot emission depending on stationary lambda value. The stationary soot emission is determined for dynamic lambda value by interpolation or extrapolation from the model. The dynamic soot emission is determined as difference between the stationary soot emission for dynamic lambda value and stationary soot emission for stationary lambda value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an internal-combustion engine operation controlling device comprising a characteristic diagram (2) a computer program for determining dynamic soot emission arising during operation of an internal-combustion engine.
