The method involves establishing correlation curves (9, 10) between a quantity of particles emitted at an exhaust of an internal combustion engine and an optical property i.e. brightness property, where the quantity is mass (Mp) of the emitted particles and a number (Np) of the emitted particles. Local values of the optical property are determined for two measurement zones (16) at a surface of a filter paper (8). An average (Lm) of the local values is calculated. The quantity of the emitted particles is determined from the average and from the correlation curves. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for controlling emission of particles emitted at exhaust of an internal combustion engine.
