The method involves acquiring calibration data concerning particle emission level in mass and a number, with respect to the brightness. Particles emitted by the engine is collected on a collection support (58) i.e. filter, collected during operation of a heat engine. The brightness of the support is measured after collection of the particles. A result of the brightness measurement is compared with the calibration data. The number and the mass of the emitted particles from the comparison result of the brightness measurement with the calibration data are evaluated. An independent claim is also included for an embarked device for determination of mass and number of particles emitted by an exhaust gas line of a heat engine.
