The method involves detecting an estimated trapped particle loading level (17) in a particle filter from a predetermined particle emission model. A real trapped particle loading level (16) in the particle filter is determined from information of a measuring unit, where the measuring unit is formed by temperature and pressure sensors. The estimated and real levels are compared. The predetermined particle emission model is corrected based on the comparison result.
