The device (10) has a sample injector (40) for injecting a fluid sample in a mobile phase during an injection period. A separating unit (30) e.g. chromatographic separation column, separates different fractions of the injected sample, and a detector (50) e.g. fluorescence detector, detects the separated different fractions of the injected sample during a detection period. The device is designed to temporally synchronize the injection period and the detection period with each other. The detector and the sample injector form a communications network. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating different fractions of a fluid sample.
