The method involves detecting a region in front of a vehicle i.e. passenger car (1), using a camera device (4). Air ventilation of a passenger compartment (1.1) of the vehicle is controlled based on the detection. An exhaust gas flow (A) of another vehicle i.e. lorry (2), is detected using the camera device, where the latter vehicle is driven ahead of and lateral to the former vehicle. The air ventilation is controlled based on the detected exhaust gas flow. A sequence of images is recorded using the camera. Light intensity change in the sequence is detected. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an air-ventilation function of an air-conditioning system in a passenger compartment in a vehicle.
