PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an acceleration detecting technique that allows reduction in misdetection of acceleration arising from an unintended operation of a user, or of the malfunction of an apparatus owing thereto. PSOLUTION: An acceleration detector for detecting acceleration arising from the motion of a detected body includes an acceleration detecting means for detecting accelerations in at least three axial directions arising from the motion of the detected body; a determination means for determining an axis, in which the value of acceleration is minimum among accelerations in at least the three axial directions detected by the acceleration detecting means; a comparison means for determining an axis, in which the value of acceleration is maximum among at least two axes other than the axis determined by the determination means to be one in which the value of acceleration is a minimum; an acceleration direction detecting means for detecting the direction of acceleration on the axis determined by the comparison means as being one for which the value of acceleration is maximum; and a selection means for selecting functions allotted to the detected body, according to the direction of acceleration detected by the direction detecting means.
