Methanogenesis stimulated by isolated anaerobic consortia

Methane production from a carbonaceous material is stimulated by contacting the material with a methanogenic consortium under anaerobic conditions. Active methanogenic consortia can be isolated and concentrated from anaerobic formation water of a methane-producing carbonaceous formation. Data presented herein demonstrate methane production from carbonaceous material that was essentially non­productive in the absence of contact with a methanogenic consortium.
