The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (100) i.e. diesel internal combustion engine, with a fuel volume in order to produce a torque. A defined brake torque is produced, where the brake torque acts against the produced torque of the engine. The engine is supplied with additional fuel volume for producing an additional torque to compensate the defined brake torque. The efficiency of the engine is determined on the basis of the additional fuel volume and the defined brake torque. An independent claim is also included for a computing unit for implementing a method for determining efficiency of an internal combustion engine.
