The controller (10) comprises an accelerator pedal (30) of a motor vehicle, where the controller is provided for selecting the resistance characteristic, based on the traffic conditions or topography of the traveled route. The resistance characteristics are provided by a memory (14) for the accelerator pedal. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a driver assistance system with a spacer system; and (2) a method for selecting the resistance characteristic of an accelerator pedal.
