The method involves transmitting radiation impulses by a light detecting and ranging (lidar) system, and detecting and evaluating the impulses reflected from the object. Characteristics e.g. position and size, of the object are detected, and temporary changes of a movement pattern are detected. A determination is made that whether the detected object is a stationary object or a movable object based on the changes of the movement pattern. The detected movement pattern is compared with a movement pattern stored in memory of the lidar system for detecting and/or classifying the object. An independent claim is also included for a device for reducing atmospheric influences of a light detecting and ranging (lidar) system comprising a memory for storing a movement pattern of an object.
