The method involves detecting a moving object (5) based on a temporal sequence of images captured by a camera (3) in a surrounding region (6) of a motor vehicle (1). Multiple optical flow vectors (7) at the sequence of images of the motor vehicle are determined using an electronic evaluation device. Multiple interval values at the flow vectors are defined by providing a histogram with direction components (9,10) and vector magnitude (11). The number of vector values within the respective interval values is determined, such the movable object is detected based on the histogram. An independent claim is included for a camera system for a motor vehicle.
