A device and method for use in monitoring foot traffic about a foot traffic monitoring area is disclosed. The monitoring device includes a control unit provided with a controller configured and arranged with a sensor means to, in use, detect the presence of foot traffic and trigger broadcasting of an audio and/or visual message. The controller includes a data logging means adapted to count foot traffic for data capture purposes.
