The invention relates to a method for operating an at least three-phase electric motor (1) serving as a drive assembly in a motor vehicle. The motor is actuated via an inverter (2), in particular a pulse-controlled inverter, wherein the inverter (2) comprises switch elements (3a-3f) in the form of half bridges (10a-10c) which are individually electrically connected to a respective phase (U; V; W) of the electric motor (1). When a first switch element (3a) of a first half bridge (10a) connected to a first phase (U) is permanently closed/opened as a result of a failure, a second switch element (3d) of the first half bridge (10a) is permanently opened/closed, and in a first angular range of an electric revolution which is not influenced by the first phase (U), all switch elements (3b, 3c, 3e, 3f) of the further half bridges (10b, 10c) are actuated in the conventional manner.
