PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing Polygonum multiflorum extract for reducing blood cholesterol is provided to prevent and relieve hypercholesterolemia. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for reducing blood cholesterol contains 0.02-50 wt% of Polygonum multiflorum ethanol extract as an active ingredient. The ethanol extract of Polygonum multiflorum is prepared by washing, drying, and pulverizing Polygonum multiflorum, isolating with a ultrahigh speed vacuum extractor of low temperature at 90-98C for 5-7 hours, and concentrating. A functional food with activity of reducing blood cholesterol contains the ethanol extract as an active ingredient. The pharmaceutical composition is used in the form of powder, granules, tablets, capsules, suspension, emulsion, syrup, or sterilization injection solution.
