PURPOSE: A method for controlling the combustion mechanism of an HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine is provided to efficiently control knocking and excessive ignition delay of an engine by optimally controlling the combustion condition of the engine. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling the combustion mechanism of an HCCI engine is as follows. A driving condition including torque is determined(S110). The ignition delay and compression ratio are determined from saved information based on the driving condition(S120). The combination of average temperatures and temperature gradients in the beginning of ignition, corresponding to ignition delay are extracted from the saved information(S130). The average temperature and temperature gradient with the optimum heat release rate are determined from the combination(S140). The HCCI engine is driven corresponding to the determined average temperature and temperature gradient(S150).
