The compliant pressure roller for creating uniform pressure at the nip 42, 10 has a fixed inner core 12. A plurality of shoe 14 is mounted pivotably to the fixed inner core. Non-magnetic divider 16 generates a plurality of annular chambers (18) and a shoe occupies a single chamber. And magnetorheological fluid filling the respective chamber, a plurality of magnetic field generator (13) varies the magnetic field in the respective chambers. Thin, rotatable shell (24) surrounds a plurality of chambers, shoes, and stationary inner core.
