A method for producing an electrolyte-filled air electrode (30) of a molten carbonate fuel cell, comprising the steps of a) producing a porous air electrode by a sintering process; b) distributing electrolyte powder (90) in the form of a eutectic mixture over a surface of the air electrode; c) pressing the electrolyte powder evenly distributed over the surface of the air electrode onto the air electrode by means of a pressure roller (120) and placing a graphite plate of a predetermined weight on the electrolyte powder distributed over the surface of the air electrode on the surface, and d) filling the air electrode with the electrolyte powder pressed onto the air electrode by heat treatment, a graphite plate being used in step c) which is ≥ the size of the air electrode, so that all of the electrolyte powder distributed on the surface of the air electrode is covered in order to remove electrolyte powder from the air electrode to avoid the pressure of the reducing gas generated during the heat treatment.
