High-quality fitting of a hearing device and in particular a hearing device should be accelerated. For this purpose, an adaptation method is proposed, in which a percentile analysis (10) for obtaining at least one frequency response of the hearing device is obtained and a deviation (11) of the frequency response from a target gain characteristic is determined. A setting of the hearing device is then changed (12) so that the deviation is reduced. To check the effect of the change in setting, a current frequency response (13) is determined after changing the setting by means of presenting a constant noise signal or a single sine sweep at the input of the hearing device and level measurement at the output. This frequency response measurement as a second step can be carried out much more quickly than the very precise percentile analysis at the beginning of the method.
