The method involves applying alternating supply voltage (Un) to a winding (3) of a stator in order to take a permanent single-phase synchronous motor (2) i.e. pump, in operation. A parameter correlated with rotational torque of the synchronous motor is determined from the applied alternating supply voltage and/or current induced in the stator winding. The synchronous motor is shutdown when a predetermined criterion is met in relation to the parameter. The predetermined criterion is set by a value of the determined parameter lying within a predetermined range of values. An independent claim is also included for a domestic appliance comprising a circuit device for operating a permanent single-phase synchronous motor.
