The method involves energizing an armature via a commutator by using brushes, where rotational speed of a direct current machine i.e. starter-motor (2), is calculated from electrical parameters. Calibration of the rotational speed is executed. The rotational speed is derived from a rotational speed constant and voltage induced in the armature during an operation of the direct current machine. The induced voltage is derived from brush resistance and armature resistance at temporarily defined, specific time points. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a controller for an electrical machine such as direct current machine i.e. starter-motor, for an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle, comprising a measuring and evaluating device (2) a computer program product having a set of instructions to perform a method for determining rotational speed of an electrical machine such as direct current machine i.e. starter-motor, for an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle.
