The method involves detecting a surrounding area of a vehicle (1) by a detecting unit (2.1), where a movement direction of the vehicle is detected by another detecting unit (2.3). The position of objects is formed in the surrounding area of an outer mirror (1.1,1.2) by an adjusting unit (2.4,2.5) for alignment of the outer mirror depending on the movement direction of the vehicle such that the objects are represented in a view field of a driver of the vehicle on a mirror surface of the outer mirror. An independent claim is also included for a device for aligning an outer mirror of a vehicle.
