The method involves determining position and/or direction of a recording unit (3) relative to a vehicle (1). A deviation of the direction from a reference-direction and/or deviation of a position from the reference-position are determined. The recording unit is mechanically aligned in an automatic manner, during the determined minimum deviation, where the alignment is implemented, during driving operation of the vehicle. A rotation parameter and/or a parameter for translation of a co-ordinate system of the recording unit to the vehicle co-ordinate system are found for determining position. An independent claim is also included for a device for alignment of the recording unit that is arranged at a vehicle.
