PURPOSE: A broadcasting receiving apparatus having a multiple standby mode and a mode switching method thereof are provided to efficiently reduce power through multiple standby mode operation. CONSTITUTION: If a user command is not inputted in an active-standby mode, a processor determines whether an STB(Set Top Box) performs a background-function(S240,S250). In case the background-function does not perform, the processor switches an operation mode of the STB into a manual standby mode(S260). If the user command is not inputted in the manual-standby mode, the processor determines whether the background-function performing time by using an RTC(Real Time Clock)(S270,S280).
