The system (1) has a set of video cameras (2) positioned and/or positionable at two different monitoring areas e.g. road intersection, and an evaluation module (5). A database (6) stores feature sets (MS) of to-be detected vehicles. A detection module (7) detects a search vehicle by comparison of a search feature set (SMS) including an appearance characteristic e.g. length, of the search vehicle with the features sets of the vehicles to be detected.
